Discover the Countryside Beyond Angkor

Siem Reap is best known as the gateway to Angkor, but the surrounding countryside offers another rewarding experience. Beyond the city are rice fields, lotus ponds, family farms, Buddhist pagodas and small communities connected by rural roads. Agriculture has long played an important role in Cambodian life, with rice remaining one of the country’s most important crops.

A quad bike tour allows travellers to explore this landscape with a guide while visiting areas that are difficult to reach on a conventional sightseeing tour. The scenery changes with the seasons—from dry, golden tracks to vibrant green fields and muddy adventure trails.

This is an outdoor experience rather than a fixed cultural-site tour. Routes may change according to weather, road conditions, water levels, rider ability and community activities.

What You May See

The precise route depends on your selected package and operator, but countryside tours may include:

  • Rice fields and agricultural land

  • Lotus ponds and vegetable farms

  • Rural villages and traditional homes

  • Cattle, water buffalo and local farm activity

  • Buddhist pagodas or small countryside temples

  • Local markets and family workshops on longer tours

  • Dirt roads, off-road trails and seasonal muddy tracks

  • Sunrise or sunset views across the fields

Village or school visits are not guaranteed unless clearly included in the confirmed itinerary.

Our Recommended Two-Hour Tour

A two-hour countryside ride offers a good balance between adventure, scenery and comfort.

Suggested Itinerary

Hotel pickup

A tuk-tuk or vehicle collects you from The Riverfront Central Hotel and takes you to the operator’s base outside central Siem Reap.

Registration and safety briefing

Meet the guide, receive a helmet and learn how to control the quad bike. Beginners complete a short familiarisation ride before joining the countryside route.

Guided countryside ride

Follow your guide along rural roads and dirt tracks through rice fields, farmland and village areas. The pace is adjusted according to the group’s ability and trail conditions.

Scenic stops

Pause at selected locations for photographs and views. Depending on the confirmed route, you may pass a pagoda, local farm or small community.

Sunset over the fields

For an afternoon departure, enjoy the changing colours over the countryside before returning to the operator’s base.

Return to the hotel

Clean off the dust or mud, enjoy drinking water and take the arranged transfer back to the hotel.

Allow additional time for hotel transfers, registration and safety training beyond the advertised riding duration.

Sunrise or Sunset: Which Is Better?

Sunrise Tour

Choose a sunrise ride if you prefer cooler temperatures, quiet trails and soft morning light. Some operators begin at approximately 5:30 AM, so an early hotel departure is required.

Sunset Tour

The sunset tour is the most popular choice for first-time visitors. It combines countryside scenery with warm afternoon light and normally requires less time than an extended excursion.

Sunset is weather-dependent and cannot be guaranteed. During the wet season, cloud cover and trail conditions may affect the route and view.

Daytime Tour

Morning and daytime departures provide flexible scheduling and are suitable for travellers who want a longer ride. Avoid the hottest hours when possible, especially during Cambodia’s warmer months.

How to Get There

Quad-bike operators are generally located outside central Siem Reap, close to the countryside trails. Many established operators offer tuk-tuk pickup and return from hotels in Siem Reap. The exact travel time depends on the selected base and traffic, but guests should normally allow approximately 15–30 minutes each way. Guests of The Riverfront Central Hotel can ask the Tour Desk to coordinate the departure time, operator confirmation and return transfer. Do not drive independently to an unfamiliar operator unless the location and route have been confirmed.

What Is Usually Included?

Depending on the selected operator and package, the tour commonly includes:

  • Quad bike and fuel

  • Experienced countryside guide

  • Safety briefing and practice session

  • Helmet

  • Drinking water

  • Hotel pickup and return within central Siem Reap

  • Local lunch on selected full-day tours

  • Applicable taxes when stated by the operator

What May Not Be Included?

Unless specifically confirmed, the following may cost extra:

  • Meals and additional drinks

  • Travel or activity insurance

  • Raincoat or waterproof clothing

  • Temple or attraction tickets

  • Personal expenses

  • Professional photographs

  • Tips for the guide

  • Extra riding time

  • Hotel transfers outside the standard pickup area

Request a written confirmation of the final itinerary, total price, inclusions and cancellation conditions before paying.

Who Can Join?

No previous quad-bike experience is normally necessary. Established operators provide instructions, a safety briefing and a supervised practice ride. Age policies vary considerably. One Siem Reap operator states that its insurer requires riders to be 18 or older, while its full-day package is displayed as suitable for ages 12+ with younger participants accompanied by an adult or guide. Because the published information is not fully consistent, the rider’s exact age, height and ability must be confirmed directly before booking.

Guests should be reasonably fit and able to:

  • Sit securely on the vehicle

  • Hold the handlebars and operate the controls

  • Follow the guide’s instructions

  • Manage vibration and uneven ground

  • React safely to changing trail conditions

Children, pregnant travellers and guests with back, neck, heart, balance or mobility conditions should consult the operator before booking. Pregnant guests should generally avoid quad biking because of the risk of jolts, falls and collision.

Driving Licence and Experience

Some established guided-tour operators state that previous driving experience and a driving licence are not required for their controlled countryside excursions. However, this is an operator policy rather than a universal rule.

Guests should confirm:

  • The operator’s minimum rider age

  • Whether a licence is required

  • Whether the route uses public roads

  • The operator’s insurance conditions

  • Whether younger guests may ride only as passengers

Never assume that participation automatically means you are insured.

Essential Safety Advice

Quad biking is a motorised adventure activity and involves genuine risk. Safe participation depends on responsible riding, maintained equipment, suitable trail conditions and compliance with the guide’s instructions.

Before departure:

  • Choose an established operator with trained guides

  • Ask whether the vehicle and activity are insured

  • Check that your travel insurance covers ATV or quad-bike activities

  • Inspect the helmet and ensure that it fits securely

  • Attend the complete safety briefing

  • Practise braking, turning and acceleration

  • Tell the guide about medical conditions or limited riding confidence

  • Do not ride after consuming alcohol or recreational drugs

During the tour:

  • Wear your helmet correctly at all times

  • Follow the guide and remain on the approved route

  • Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead

  • Slow down near people, animals, homes and road crossings

  • Never race, overtake or perform stunts

  • Keep both hands on the handlebars while moving

  • Do not use a handheld phone while riding

  • Stop and inform the guide if you feel unsafe

The guide may restrict or end a guest’s participation if instructions are ignored.

What to Wear and Bring

Wear practical clothing that can become dusty, wet or muddy.

Recommended items include:

  • Closed-toe shoes with a secure grip

  • Long trousers or knee-length shorts

  • Lightweight, comfortable clothing

  • Sunscreen

  • Sunglasses or operator-provided goggles

  • Insect repellent

  • Refillable water bottle

  • Rain jacket during the wet season

  • Small secure bag

  • Change of clothes

  • Camera or phone with a secure strap

Avoid loose scarves, flowing clothing, valuable jewellery and open sandals. Long hair should be tied securely.

Best Time of Year

November to February

Generally offers cooler conditions, firmer tracks and comfortable daytime temperatures. This is a popular period, so advance reservations are recommended.

March to May

Conditions are usually dry and dusty, but afternoons can become very hot. Morning or sunset tours are preferable.

June to October

The countryside is often greener, with dramatic clouds, active rice fields and muddy trails. Rain can make the ride more adventurous, but routes may change or become inaccessible.

Weather, farming activities and flooding may affect the itinerary at any time.

Countryside Code of Conduct

The countryside is home to working communities—not an amusement park. Guests should behave respectfully throughout the tour.

  • Slow down when passing homes, schools, farms, people or animals

  • Stay on routes approved by the guide

  • Do not enter private land without permission

  • Keep noise and dust to a reasonable level near communities

  • Never photograph residents closely without consent

  • Do not photograph children without permission from a responsible adult

  • Avoid giving money, sweets or gifts directly to children

  • Do not touch livestock or interrupt farm work

  • Do not leave litter, cigarette ends or plastic behind

  • Never damage crops, fences, roads or religious property

  • Dress respectfully when entering a pagoda or village community

  • Support local businesses through respectful, voluntary purchases

If the route includes a religious site, cover your shoulders and knees, speak quietly and follow local instructions.

Responsible Tourism

Choose an operator that uses designated trails, maintains its vehicles and works respectfully with surrounding communities.

A responsible tour should avoid:

  • High-speed riding through populated areas

  • Creating unnecessary dust near homes

  • Entering fields without permission

  • Disturbing livestock or wildlife

  • Exploitative school or orphanage visits

  • Treating residents as photography subjects

  • Leaving waste along the route

Travellers can support the countryside by purchasing refreshments or locally made products from legitimate community businesses without pressuring residents for staged interactions.

Photography Tips

Sunrise and late afternoon provide the most attractive natural light. Dust, water and vibration can damage electronic equipment, so protect your camera or phone in a secure case.

Only take photographs when the quad bike is completely stopped in a safe location. Ask permission before photographing residents, monks or private homes.

A small action camera may be suitable if the operator approves its secure mounting. Do not hold a selfie stick or phone while riding.

Is the Tour Suitable for Families?

The experience can be suitable for families, but children’s participation depends on the operator’s age, height, passenger and insurance rules.

Before booking, provide:

  • Each child’s age

  • Approximate height and weight

  • Whether the child will ride or be a passenger

  • The accompanying adult’s details

  • Any relevant medical conditions

A shorter private tour is often the most comfortable option for families and first-time riders.

Accessibility

Standard quad bikes and uneven countryside routes are not generally wheelchair accessible. Riders must usually transfer onto the vehicle and maintain balance independently.

Guests with limited mobility should discuss their needs with the operator before booking. A private vehicle-based countryside tour may be a safer alternative.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need previous quad-bike experience?

Usually not. Beginners receive instructions, a safety briefing and a practice session before departure.

Do I need a driving licence?

Some guided-tour operators do not require one, but rules differ. Confirm the policy for your chosen operator and route.

Will I get dirty?

Probably. Dry-season trails can be dusty, while wet-season tracks may be muddy. Wear appropriate clothing and bring a change of clothes.

Is hotel pickup included?

It is included in many published Siem Reap packages, but you should confirm that your hotel is within the operator’s standard transfer zone.

Can two people share one quad?

Many operators offer tandem packages. A combined weight limit may apply, and the passenger must meet the operator’s safety requirements.

Can children participate?

Possibly, but age rules vary. Children may be restricted to riding as passengers with an adult or guide. Written confirmation is recommended.

Is the tour available during rain?

Light rain may not stop the tour, and some guests enjoy the muddy trails. Heavy rain, flooding or unsafe conditions may require a changed route, delayed departure or cancellation.

Does the tour enter Angkor temples?

A standard countryside quad-bike tour usually explores rural areas outside the principal temple circuit. Longer routes may pass smaller temples, but any required admission ticket should be confirmed in advance.

Is travel insurance necessary?

It is strongly recommended. Check specifically that your policy covers ATV or quad-bike riding, as some policies exclude motorised adventure activities.

Our Recommendation

For most guests, we recommend a two-hour afternoon countryside tour finishing near sunset. It provides enough riding time to enjoy the fields and villages without committing to a full-day excursion. Choose a private or small-group departure if you prefer a slower pace, additional photo stops or more individual support from the guide.
