Is Prek Toal part of the Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve?

Yes. Prek Toal is a protected core area within the wider Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve and has also been recognised as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance.

What is the best month to visit?

January to April generally offers excellent opportunities to observe active breeding colonies. Conditions vary annually according to rainfall and water levels.

Are bird sightings guaranteed?

No. Prek Toal is a natural habitat, not a zoo. Species and viewing conditions vary by season, weather, water level and bird movement.

Is an Angkor Pass required?

No. The Angkor Pass does not cover Prek Toal. Sanctuary, boat and conservation fees are separate.

Can I visit without a guide?

Independent access is difficult and may not be permitted in sensitive areas. A recognised operator and authorised local guide are strongly recommended.

How long does the tour take?

Allow approximately 10–12 hours for the complete journey from Siem Reap, although seasonal routes can make the day shorter or longer.

Do I need binoculars?

Yes. Binoculars greatly improve the experience and allow wildlife to be observed from a responsible distance.

Do not operate a drone without explicit official permission. Drones can disturb breeding colonies and may be prohibited in the sanctuary.

Facilities are limited. Choose a package that includes meals or arrange a hotel breakfast box and packed lunch in advance.

What happens during bad weather?

Strong wind, rain or storms may delay, shorten or cancel boat travel. Safety should always take priority, and cancellation terms should be confirmed before booking.
